Batu Hijau International School was specifically established to cater for the needs of the PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara and the PT Fluor Daniel expatriate population. It was initially located in Mataram. Two campuses operated for a short while, then a single campus operated from January 2000 in Sumbawa. The K-8 school opened in early September 1997 with an enrollment of 25 children. Current enrollment numbers 50-60 students. The K-8 student population includes children from a number of countries, but predominantly American and Australia. The teaching staff is generally recruited from America or Australia. The curriculum offered has a distinctly international flavor and has been developed from the latest materials and research available. In addition to the international curriculum, the school takes advantage of its unique local environment. The school is governed by a board of directors, comprising five company representatives, two parent representatives, the school principal and one teacher representative. Batu Hijau is currently an accredited school through the Council of International Schools. The school was awarded accreditation in 2004. Visit the school website at www.batuhijauschool.org
