Sumbawa is much larger than Lombok or Bali but has a more sparse population of around 800,000 people who mainly fish or farm. They are mostly devout Muslims. Gunung Tambora on Sumbawa erupted in 1815 spewing some 100 cubic km of debris into the atmosphere. It is located on the northern peninsula of Sumbawa and is 2,820 metres high.
